Journal Jar 6 – Elementary School

I promise I didn’t know this Journal Jar prompt was coming next when I wrote the last one. All the prompts are in a jar and I pull them out one at a time.

Journal Jar

Describe a typical day in elementary school.

I went to a number of elementary schools as between the ages of 5 and 11 I lived in 3 different countries. I can’t remember the school in Bahrain as I think I was only there for about a year. I remember the school in Malawi though. We had blue gingham check dresses, we had to wear dresses below the knee (it was law back then that women and girls had to wear skirts/dresses below the knee, no shorts or trousers allowed). I know we started school early, about 7.30 am I think and finished at lunch time. My dad would drop us off at school on his way to the office and come to pick us up to take us home for lunch on his lunch break. If we had swim practice, sports or brownies in the afternoon, we would stay in school with a packed lunch and then my mum would pick us up later. I can’t remember much else about it, to be honest, apart from having a break part way through the morning. I think we had about 4 or 5 different lessons every day including Maths, English, Geography, History, French, Art, Swimming/PE. Break time was great, we got to go and play on the jungle gym – it was on concrete! We also played French skipping (or Chinese jump rope). We used to get as high as shoulders! I’m not sure how.

When we left Malawi and moved to Botswana, I finished junior school at boarding school in the UK. Our day began when we were woken up at 7 am but school itself started with assembly at 8.30 am with lessons starting at 9. We finished the day at 3.50 pm and would often have after school activities until tea time and the prep time (when we had to do our homework). We then went to the dormitories at around 7 pm with lights out at 8 pm.
