Q & A

So, the lovely Becky, decided to nominate her step-mum (me) as her one and only nomination for this Q&A.  Now, if anyone else had nominated me I’d probably have politely declined to answer the questions but as it’s Becky, I’ll give it a shot.  I will, however, not be setting any of my own questions or nominating anyone as the only person I’d nominate would be … Becky.

Here goes.  Firstly, the rules as copied and pasted from Becky’s post:

(as taken from AJ’s blog post)

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the questions sent to you.
  • Nominate around ten bloggers. I will nominate one blogger – my step-mum, Fi (and whoever else wants to answer my questions).
  • Create your set of questions for your nominees. See below…
  • List the rules and display the Brotherhood Of The World logo in your post.

Now onto Becky’s questions:

1.  Why did you start your blog?
I initially started my blog on MSN as a private blog in about 2006 as an online journal to record my thoughts about being a mature student at college, and then university.  I then started a public blog when the MSN one was moved on to WordPress in around 2010 and I couldn’t be bothered to keep it all private anymore.  The WordPress blog started as somewhere to record my exercise goals and whether or not I reached those goals as well as some of the challenges faced having a child with a disability.

2. What do you wish others would blog about more often?
I’m not particularly bothered about what other people blog about.  I have some which I follow but I don’t wish they would blog about certain topics more than others.  I choose to read them because they are interesting to me.

3.  Where do you go to for blog post ideas when you’re out of them yourself?
A few years ago I found a list of questions for a “Journal Jar” and printed them out.  I have them sat on my desk and every so often I’ll put my hand in a pull out a prompt.  I also have a list of “interesting dates” in the front of my diary which is useful too.  Did you know it’s Strawberry Ice Cream Day today and Nothing Day tomorrow?

4.  Have you made many friends through blogging?
I haven’t made any friends who I’ve met up with or anything but I have a few bloggers who I follow and who follow me and we interact fairly regularly.  Well, we used to when I was blogging a lot more regularly/frequently than I do now.  I don’t have time to read loads of blogs and then comment on them too.  Sorry fellow bloggers x

5.  What are the best things about reading blog posts written by others?
I love reading lots of different blogs for different reasons.  Some will inspire me to get out there and get my butt in gear to reach my exercise goals.  Others will give me ideas for things to make or do.  Others make me laugh out loud.  I love reading Becky’s blog because it gives me an insight into what she’s been going through even though we do speak to each other on a fairly regular basis, some things are easier to write about than talk about.  Also, if you haven’t read some of Becky’s earlier posts, there are some laugh out loud reads on there.  Her recent stuff is good too 😉

Thanks for this Becky.  I promise, I’ll try to blog more regularly this year but I can’t guarantee it.

Share Your World – 2014 Week 4

Share Your World – Week 4

Cee from Cee’s Photography asks 4 questions each week for you to answer.  If you’d like to take part in Share Your World why not check it out?

Do you recharge your energy by going out with friends for a good time or by spending with quiet time alone?

I don’t like going out, I’d much rather spend time at home with a good book, film or tv show.  That said, I love going out with my family too so if I can go out for a meal followed by a book, that would be great 🙂

What is the most number of blankets you’ve ever had on your bed?

None.  I don’t use blankets.  I’ve had a duvet and a quilt when I’ve been really cold though.

You are invited to a party that will be attended by many fascinating people you never met. Would you attend this party if you were to go by yourself?

Probably not.  I’d have to be told that I have to go.  Then again, I might if it was during the day and I didn’t have to find someone to stay with my son while I went.  After all, I joined Weight Watchers on my own.

Do you like talking to people on the phone? Or do you prefer voice mail or email?

I’m all right talking to people on the phone but prefer face to face.  Definitely not voice mail – I get tongue-tied and ramble.  If it’s a choice between leaving a voice mail message or emailing, I’ll email every time.  At least I can check my message before I send it.

Share Your World – 2014 Week 3

I’m new to Share Your World and stumbled across it thanks to a task on Zero to Hero and the WordPress Blog Events Listings

In what do you find the simplest of joys?
Being able to speak to my husband via Skype while he is working away from home.  Isn’t technology wonderful?  When it works anyway.

Jello or Pudding? And what is your favorite flavor?
As I am from the UK and we don’t have Jello, I don’t think I’ve ever tried it, I’m going to have to go with pudding.  By pudding do you mean something like Angel Delight which you mix from a packet with milk and leave in the fridge to set?  Kind of like a mousse?  If so, strawberry is my favourite flavour.

Is there a language you would like to learn?
I’d love to be able to speak French or German more fluently than my GCSE/A Level standard.  I can however, communicate with Makaton.  Makaton is a sign language based on British Sign Language in which you sign the key words of a sentence while you are speaking.  It encourages communication for those who struggle with speech and understanding.  I have been using it with my son since he was 2 1/2 and as he started using signs his communication skills improved amazingly.

Do you prefer juice or fruit?

Another Blogging Challenge?

Thanks Zero to Hero, as if I didn’t have enough to do.

Today’s challenge: Find a blogging event (try our Blog Event Listings) and throw your hat into the ring.

As I’m already doing BlogHer’s January NaBloPoMo, I guess in theory I already have this covered but the idea is to have a challenge to keep me blogging after the Zero to Hero challenge ends and my NaBloPoMo challenge also ends on 31 January.  So, I’ll have to find something else.  I don’t want another daily challenge as I know that there are days when I just won’t want to get my laptop out at 9 o’clock at night to try to draft a quick, and probably not very good, post just to meet the daily challenge.

I checked out the Blog Event Listings and found that some blog events haven’t been posting new prompts for a while and others just didn’t interest me at all.  I have, however, found a couple that I liked and I’ve decided to start with one, but maybe not every day or week.

The first one I’ve decided to join is Share Your World from Cee’s Photography.  This is a weekly challenge, which is so much more manageable for me, in which Cee asks 4 random questions for you to answer.  Plus there’s a cool badge to put in the widget bar and/or posts 🙂

I’m also going to continue with the Weekly Photo Challenge from the Daily Post but, again, not necessarily every week.  Sometimes it just doesn’t interest me or I can’t find a photo or photo opportunity to do it.

Zero to Hero: Day 3

Today’s assignment: write the post that was on your mind when you decided to start a blog.

What was on my mind when I started this blog?  I don’t actually remember, I mean it was nearly 4 years ago!  Actually, I started my WordPress blog in 2010, my first blog (same name different platform) was started in 2006.  I did, however, attempt to answer this question as part of a Daily Post prompt in April 2013.

When I started my blog I was at university trying to juggle uni course work, a job, husband, child and housework and just wanted somewhere to put my thoughts down on “paper”.  Hence the title “Fi’s Mutterings and Mumblings”.  Over the years I’ve dipped in and out of it and it has evolved into a platform for me to share experiences about family life with a child with a learning disability, speech delay etc; a husband who works away from home as a driver trainer which has led to a few posts about driving; my love of Disney and, in particular, Disney World; my attempts at the Swimathon and running to raise money for charity; and just about anything which bugs me or inspires me and I think others would, maybe, like to share.

I write about a variety of subjects: things that bug me, silly things I’ve done, about my son and his development, fundraising, running, swimming, travel/travel preparation, oh, and of course, Disney and I take part in challenges such as Zero to Hero, Daily Post, Weekly Photo Challenge and my own 101 in 1001 challenge, my virtual walk.

I don’t always write and post as often as I’d like.  Life, you know, it gets in the way sometimes.

Zero to Hero: Day 1

I must be a glutton for punishment, not only did I say I was going to blog every day as part of NaBloPoMo (January 2014), I’ve also decided to take part in Zero to Hero.  I know it is a daily blogging challenge but I’m not going to worry too much if I don’t do it every day.  I do, however, have to complete each task in the order they are assigned.  So, on to Day 1.

zero-to-hero-badgeToday’s assignment: write and publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post.

I wrote my initial WordPress “Hello World” introductory post back in March 2010.  A lot has changed in nearly 4 years but at the same time not much has.

I am still an administrator/bookkeeper but I now work for a small local charity as well as being self-employed.  I am still married to a driver trainer, he says he isn’t an instructor as he doesn’t teach learners.  I have a son with an undiagnosed disability which presents itself as a learning disability with developmental speech delay.

My blog is a mish-mash of a variety of topics including travel to Disney, driving, disability (not too much), fundraising, exercise, diet, challenges…  I try to blog regularly but don’t always succeed.  To date I have written 338 blog posts but only about 305 are published as the ones pre-2010 were written as a private journal on MSN’s blogging platform and then transferred to WordPress when they merged (?).  As they were written as a private journal, I don’t want them available to the world at large but I want to be able to look back on them myself.  So, I made them private rather than deleting it.

If you want to know more about me, check out my About Me page.
