2014 in review: WordPress.Com Stats

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,800 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 47 trips to carry that many people.

Click here to see the complete report.

I had a look at the reports for 2013 and 2012 and have put a couple of comparisons below:

Number of views of my blog: 2014 was the best year for views with 2,800, up from 1,700 in 2013 (I had 2,200 views in 2012)

Number of blog posts written: In 2014 I wrote/published 180 new blog posts (to date) which is only 25 less than I wrote in 2013 and 2012 combined (111 and 94)

Number of pictures added:  I only added 108 pictures in 2014 which is the least I have added since 2012

Number of countries my viewers came from:  This is going down, again, with only 57 this year.

However, some of my most popular posts are ones which I wrote in 2011 or 2013.

I’m looking forward to more blogging in 2015 and hope to keep up with more regular posts.

I popped on to WordPress this morning to read a blog and saw a notification:

I have 100 followers!  How’d that happen?  I’m not that interesting really.  Why do I have 100 followers?  Do they really read what I write or am I just one of hundreds of blogs which clutter up their feed?  Probably the latter.

Sure, I’ve been blogging for over 4 years and events like Zero to Hero and NaBloPoMo have definitely helped to increase my profile and direct some more readers my way but still, 100 people following my little mutterings, rants and musings!?!  OK, OK I know I’m repeating myself but I can’t believe it.

OK, I’ll stop now.  No wait, one more:

I have 100 followers!  Really?  Why?!?!

OK, really done now 😀

It’s National Stationery Week!

I didn’t know there was a National Stationery Week.  How did I not know that there was a National Stationery Week?  I love stationery, especially notebooks and pens.  In fact, Paperchase is one of my favourite shops.

I have 3 or 4 notebooks on the go at any one time with at least 2 or 3 waiting to be started. Oh, and pens, don’t get me started on pens.  I love pens.  I think I have over 10 “nice” patterned pens, not those cheap biros but nice pens.  I really like post-it notes too.

I’d like to say that I still write letters on a regular basis, not including the ones I write as part of my job, but I don’t.  I do, however, write postcards when I go on holiday.  I should write more postcards and/or letters.  It’s nice to receive post that isn’t a formal letter, bill or bank statement.  If I write letters, maybe other people will write them back to me.  Probably not though considering a 2nd class stamp costs 53p and a 1st class stamp costs 62p.  So, it is a lot cheaper, not to mention quicker, to write an email.

They are celebrating a different stationery item every day via their Facebook page.  Yesterday was pencils and today is notebooks.

Finally, I still use a paper diary/filofax at work and home as well as a wall calendar to keep track of all my appointments.  I have an electronic diary on my phone too but that is only because I can set a reminder alarm for an hour before the appointment so I’m not late!

If you love stationery as much as I do, enjoy National Stationery Week!

Look at that Sunshine

I’m not talking about the weather, although we have had a bit of sunshine in between the rain.  It seems that awards breed.  No sooner have I accepted the Liebster Award than I get nominated for the Sunshine Award too.  Thank you 20/20 Hines Sight. sunshineaward After a little search around the blogosphere, I found out that the Sunshine Award is given to those who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere.  I do that?  Really? So, as with any of the blogger nominated awards there are rules.  These are: The rules for accepting the Sunshine Award:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog
  • List 11 facts about YOU!
  • Nominate 10 other blogs to receive the award
  • Announce the nominations to the nominee

11 facts about me:

  1. I am a Virgo and a pig (Chinese astrology)
  2. I returned to education in 2004 to get my degree and graduated in 2007.  I promptly got a job as a PA and returned to administration instead of trying to use my degree in Sport and Exercise Science or Sports Therapy HND.  I discovered while I was studying that I love paperwork!
  3. I broke both wrists whilst ice skating in 2006, 17 years (almost to the day) after my mum broke both her wrists whilst horse riding.  I don’t do anything by halves.
  4. I love Disney, I know you know this but thinking of 11 things is hard.  I have visited Disney World 5 times, Disneyland Paris 4 times and Disneyland once.
  5. I took my driving test 4 times and have had a full, clean licence for over 20 years.
  6. I met my husband when he taught me to drive – no he was not my instructor for all 4 tests.  He taught me between tests 3 and 4.  I haven’t stopped learning to drive though, there’s always something to learn when you travel in a car with a driver trainer 😛
  7. I am very proud of the fact that I don’t have any fillings at the age of 42.  I hate going to the dentist in case he tells me I need one.
  8. I don’t like tea or coffee.
  9. I love chocolate and cakes.
  10. I live in York.
  11. My family moved a lot when I was growing up so I went to boarding school.  We lived in Australia, Bahrain, Malawi, Botswana, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe.

I’m sorry to say that the blogs I nominate for the Sunshine Award are going to be the same, plus a couple, as I nominated for the Liebster Award.  I say “plus a couple” because I found new blogs that I like, they make be laugh, chuckle or smile every time I read one of their posts.

My nominees (should they choose to accept) for the Sunshine Award are:

Jessie Cakes
Super Mom is Dead
Baby Gates Down
The Ellieverse
Deb’s World
Midsummer 365 Project
Lisa Buck
Capture You Photography
Damsel in a Dress

On my search for information about the Sunshine Award, I also found a number of pictures which are used, so pick one you like 🙂

You wait for 3 years and then…

3 award nominations come along at once!  Actually, I think it is quite close to 4 years since I started my blog but, hey, who’s counting?

I was nominated, and accepted, the Liebster Award by Vida at Good Graciousness and then, before I finished the acceptance blog, got another nomination from What My Husband Feeds Me so replied to those questions too.  Today, I open my emails to find a notification of another comment with another nomination from Lisa Buck.  What?  I need to answer 10 more questions?  Oh dear, I’ve only answered 20 already.  Still, it would be rude not to answer them when someone has been so kind as to nominate me.  They either like what I write or they were desperately searching for a blog with less than 200 followers, stumbled in and thought “That’ll do”.

On to Lisa’s questions:

1) Are you a shipper?
I’m sorry, a what?  I’ve never heard that term before.  I don’t work on a ship or a boat though.

2) And if so, who/what do you ship?
Oh, do you mean do I sell stuff and send it out?  If that was the question, no I am not a shipper.

3) What’s your favourite book?
I already answered this on my last post.  Please check there.  It was Vida’s question 3 too.

4) If you could project yourself into the past, where would you go?
I wouldn’t go back very far, just far enough to be able to meet my maternal grandfather as he died before I was born.  I’d have loved to have met him.

5) Ketchup or Brown Sauce?

6) What’s the last dream you had?
I’m sorry, I can never remember my dreams once I’ve woken up.

7) Do you sleep with your feet under the duvet, or out?
It depends how cold or warm it is.  I suffer from Raynaud’s Syndrome so my feet get very cold very quickly.

8) Do you sing in the shower?

9) What’s the last song you listened to?
I Wanna Be Like You – Robbie Williams

10) What’s your favourite word?

And the award goes to …

I’ve been nominated for an award!  Who doesn’t like to win prizes and awards and be able to put a picture of it in their widgets?  Actually, I had to think long and hard about whether or not to accept this award.  Not because I didn’t want it or because I wasn’t thrilled to be nominated but because of the time it will take me to actually write this post!  For your information, I was notified about my nomination on 11 January 2014 and I am starting to write this post at 6.54 pm on 12 January 2014.  I have a really busy week coming up and my usual day off (apart from today), tomorrow, is being taken up by a 2 1/2 hour meeting!  Anyway, I digress.  I decided that I would accept the Liebster Award as someone, thank you Vida of Good Graciousness, seems to like what I write enough to choose my blog as one of her nominations.

So, on to the rules of the Liebster Award (I just copied and pasted these from Vida’s Liebster Award blog, with a spelling correction of favourite – I’m British I couldn’t help it!).

For my nominees – if you decide to accept, here are the rules:
1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.
2. You must answer the 10 questions given to you by the nominee before you.
3. You must nominate 10 of your favourite blogs with fewer than 200 followers and notify them of their nomination.
4. You must come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer.

 My Answers to Vida’s questions:

1.  Why did you start your blog?
I started my first blog in 2006 as a private blog.  It was a place for me to put down my thoughts.  In 2010, I started my WordPress blog as somewhere for me to share my thoughts on topics which interest me.

2.  What is your favorite hobby or activity – one that really makes you feel happy and peaceful?
I love reading.  Unfortunately I either have lots of time to read and can finish a book really quickly or don’t have enough time and don’t finish a book as quickly as I’d like.

3.  What is your favorite book?
I don’t have a favourite book.  I do, however, have 2 series of books which I am very happy to revisit over and over again.  The first is the Little House on the Prairie series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  My mum started reading these to/with my sister and me when we were about 5 and 7 years of age and we were both hooked.  The second series of books is the All Creatures Great and Small series by James Herriott.  These were books which my parents read and re-read while I was growing up and when I was in my teens I read them for the first time.  They made me laugh out loud, and still do.

4.  Tell us something about you not many people know.
Although I wear glasses at work and for driving in the dark, and long journeys, I don’t actually need them.  My optometrist told me I didn’t need them any more when I was 29.  I went back 6 months later and asked for them back.  I have an astigmatism which can get the better of me at times, my glasses give my eye muscles one less thing to worry about even though one eye has perfect vision and the other eye is only 0.25 out (most optometrists won’t prescribe corrective lenses under 0.5).

5.  What was the most magical day of your life, and why?
The day my son was born.  Do I really need to explain why? He was finally here and the biggest adventure was about to begin.

6.  Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not?
This is a tough one.  I’ve never experienced love at first sight but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.

7.  What is your favorite childhood memory?
It’s not so much a memory as a collection of memories taken from a lot of experiences which I was lucky enough to have due to living in wonderful and diverse countries like Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong.  One of my favourite memories from Malawi is my dad driving the car very fast down the runway of the airport while it was still being built.

8. Describe yourself in three words.
Shy, stubborn, Disney-mad

9. If you could spend a day with one person, living, or dead, who would it be and why?
My maternal granddad because he died 4 months after my parents’ wedding so I never got to meet him.

10. Who is the one person who can always make you smile?
My son, he may drive me mad with his repetitiveness but his smile and laugh are infectious.  Each little achievement is a huge milestone for him.

Since I started writing this acceptance post, I have received another nomination from Greta at What My Husband Feeds Me.  I don’t think I really need to answer her questions too but, so that you can get to know me a little better, I’m going to.  I apologise for making this post even longer!

1.  What was the first car you owned?
A Daewoo Matiz

2.  What was the first record you bought? CD for those to young for records
Greatest Love of All – Whitney Houston

3.  Who was your childhood hero?
My grandma

4.  What was your first pet?
A rabbit

5.  What was your favourite subject at school and

6.  why?
I loved learning about different places, how the earth was formed and how it is continuing to change.  At A Level I really enjoyed the meteorology module.

7.  Describe yourself in five words
Shy, stubborn,  Disney-mad, conscientious, bonkers

8.  If you were a character in a movie who would you be?
Oh my word!  I don’t know.  Probably the quiet best friend of the lead character.

9.  If your life was a movie, who would play you?
Kate Winslet

10.  Where would you like to go on your next vacation?
Really?  Just look through my blog a little and you’ll work it out.  No?  OK, I’ll tell you.  It’s not only where I’d like to go, it’s where we’re going, Disney World!  Actually, I’d love to go on a Disney Cruise as well as go to all of the Disneyland Parks.  One day, maybe.

My nominees (should they choose to accept) for the Liebster Award are:

Jessie Cakes
Super Mom is Dead
Baby Gates Down
My Endless Rants and Ramblings
The Ellieverse
Deb’s World
Midsummer 365 Project

I know that is only 7 nominations but all of the other blogs I follow have over 200 followers!  Oh, and I looked at some other Liebster acceptance blogs and some of them say you can nominate between 3 and 10 blogs.

My questions for you are:

  1. What do you do to relax?
  2. Do you do exercise?  If so, what is your favourite exercise?
  3. What is your dream holiday?
  4. What is your favourite recipe?  If you don’t cook, what would you like to be able to cook?
  5. What is your favourite food or meal?
  6. What are 3 tv programmes you don’t like to miss?
  7. Describe yourself in 3 words
  8. What makes you laugh?
  9. What was your least favourite subject at school?
  10. Where do you write your blog?

Good luck!

2013 in review: Stats
