Journal Jar: Bicycle

Did you have a bicycle as a child? What was it like?

I learnt to ride a bike when I was 6 or 7 when living in Malawi.  The bike was second hand, blue, too big for me and didn’t have stabilisers.  I  remember my mum running behind me holding on to the back of the seat while I got my balance before letting go.  Just as well it was too tall for me as mum didn’t have to bend down.

My second bike was a second hand purple Raleigh Chopper.

  1. I never learnt to ride a bike until I was 14. My parents tried and tried when I was younger but i’d always freak out and fall off as soon as they’d let go. Eventually my boyfriend when I was 14 managed to teach me – but after that I literally rode it twice and then stopped. I haven’t ridden a bike since, and i’m not sure i’d be able to stay on if I tried it now 😛

    • I haven’t ridden a bike since my son was small as his balance isn’t very good and buying an adult trike is expensive and bulky to store. I don’t miss riding a bike though as I was always scared to ride it in traffic, I’d rather walk.

      • Mea too – traffic always put me off. I still hate having to go round bikes in my car – wouldnt want to be the one on the bike!

  2. I was taught to ride my bike by my aunty and cousin. It was a terrifying experience. But I am really glad I can do it now!! Yesterday, for the very first time I went on a Segway. I crashed into a wall. Not embarrassing at all.
