Finally Back in the Gym

I did it, I finally got back into the gym this morning.  I haven’t been to the gym since Adam left school in mid-July, 8 weeks ago, and I have to say I’ve missed it.  I’ve still been doing exercise, mainly cardio, but it isn’t the same.

Adam started College yesterday and I took him to College for his first day just to make sure he knew where he was going.  He then walked home, on his own!  He phoned me to let me know he had finished college and was on his way home.  I was so proud of him.  Today, I walked as far as the traffic lights at Tesco and he then walked through Tesco car park and over to college.  He could have walked from home by himself but as traffic is busy at 8.30 am when he left home and I wouldn’t have left home until gone 9 am anyway I decided that if I walked to Tesco with him I could then run home up the hill, well slope really but it feels like a hill when you’re running it, and then over the railway bridge home.  It wasn’t far (2.17 km) and it definitely wasn’t a very long run (13:35) but considering that it was a constant run rather than intervals, it was what I needed.  I managed to keep a constant pace of 6:15/km 🙂

When I got home, I got my car keys and my kit bag and drove to the gym.  As I had already done my cardio, I decided to do a quick warm up on the cross trainer and then just do my strength training.  A couple of years ago, I bought New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove but never got past the first 5 weeks of Stage 1.  As I am starting again in the gym I thought it might be a good time to give it another go.  As I haven’t lifted anything except my shopping bags for the past 8 weeks I thought I’d start fairly light with the weights so this is what I did:

Goblet Squats – 2 sets of 15 reps with 10kg dumbbell
Seated row – 2 sets of 15 reps, 10kg (this was too light so I increased the weight to 15kg for the 2nd set)
Push ups – modified, on knees
Step ups – knee height, no weight (will add weight next week)
Prone jackknife – this was supposed to be using a stability ball but I used the TRX instead

After a cool down on the bike and a lovely stretch it was time to head for the showers and then home.  I enjoyed my first trip back in to the gym and hope that I can find time to go back again on Thursday.  I think I may wear my running kit to Weight Watchers so that I can run home and then go to the gym before coming back to do some work.  If I enter the house, I won’t get out again!

    I can’t wait to get back to the gym myself. I’ve been doing my cardio outside during the summer months, taking advantage of the good weather, but have really missed the heavier lifting I can only do at the gym. (At home I only have a few sets of dumbbells.) And now with all the home renovations, most of my days are spent moving/boxing/packing/painting. Soon…soon (I hope) I’ll be back to my normal routine (including gym visits).

      I don’t even have dumbbells at home so can only do body weight exercises. I was hoping to be able to go tomorrow as well but have just been asked if I can help out at my Weight Watchers meeting. Oh well, I’ll walk there and maybe run back. If I get finished early enough, I might get to the gym too.
