Every year Brake organises Road Safety Week. The first event was in 1997. This year the campaign is focusing on the distraction of mobile devices such as phones, mp3 players and sat navs. It’s not only for drivers either but also pedestrians, cyclists and riders.
We all know how easy it is to get distracted by the phone or the radio. It’s illegal to use a mobile phone for driving without a hands-free kit for a reason and even with a hands-free kit a mobile phone conversation takes your attention away from the road. How often do we think about the safety of using mobile devices whilst walking though? I know I walk and text, not often as I know I need to look where I’m going or I’ll walk into someone! How about listening to music on an mp3 player or your phone? Do you remember to look up and around when crossing the road or are you lost in your own little world?
So, what is the message this year? “Tune in to Road Safety” – turn off your mobile devices and pay attention to what is going on around you.
